Description4-page letter by Tatsumi Iwate to his brother Mas Iwate in the Jerome concentration camp on February 7, 1943 from Camp Shelby, Mississippi. Letterhead reads Camp Hale, hand drawn crossed out and replaced with Camp Shelby. Tatsumi writes about being in Mississippi, his outfit is 3rd Battalion, HQ Company, 442nd Infantry, about the plan to build a regiment of soldiers entirely of Nihonjin guys and that the officers are mostly Hakujin, that he is there ahead of the recruits to train them, there will be three battalions, one of each will be made up of 4 rifle companies, eventually they will go into the 'theater of operation' to fight and he assumes Europe.
