Skip to main contentBiographyTomie Arai is a sansei born and raised in New York City who has worked as an artist for over three decades. Arai was a key player within the Asian American political and cultural movements of New York, which was centered around Chinatown. Through her public murals, prints, installations, and book projects, Arai has focused on the extended Asian American community of New York by depicting the stories and history of everyday people. As she has noted, "stories about the past are a way of making sense of the present" so that "our art and works mark our place in the heart of this city [New York] and country."
