Fukuhara, Henry

1913 -
BiographyIn 1943, Henry left Manzanar to do furlough work in Shelley, Idaho with the intent of finding a place to relocate. From Idaho he went to Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah to check it out for relocating. Since he was in the area, he decided to visit Topaz. He returned to Shelley, where he remained until Thanksgiving. Then he returned to Manzanar.

In February 1944, he traveled to Denver (where he didn't know anyone) and then on to Chicago. Togo Tanaka had already relocated there and Henry visited him. He then traveled to NYC where he stayed at the YMCA's dorm for men, the Sloan House. The WRA had offices at the Empire State Building and Henry visited the office to look for work. He finally found an appropriate situation in Farmingdale, Long Island. A bankrupt greenhouse business was being restarted to grow flowers.

Henry returned to Manzanar and brought his mother, father, wife, two children, youngest brother and two sisters back with him to Farmingdale. Three of his brothers were already in the service: Jimmy served in MacArthur's Occupation Forces; George did a tour of duty in Europe; and Frank was a part of MIS but apparently did not see any action.

Since there were labor shortages, Henry said he could help find workers and was sent to Rohwer to recruit help. He convinced two families and a single man to accompany him to New York. This was in 1945.

Henry evetually moved to Deer Park, Long Island where he lived for 42 years before returning to Santa Monica.

During his wartime travels, Henry recalled that he experienced no discrimination. "It wasn't like being in California," noting that "even in Salt Lake City, nobody bothered us."
