Uno, Sadayuki1901 - 1989

Sadayuki Uno (1901-1989) was an accomplished painter, craftsperson, and practitioner of shogun. Born in Hiroshima, he and his brother immigrated to the United States to join their father, who was already here. Uno trained as an artist at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and was a friend of artist Henry Sugimoto before the war. After Executive Order 9066, Uno and his family relocated from the East Bay of San Francisco to Fresno to avoid evacuation. Unfortunately, such a move proved useless and Uno and his family were subsequently incarcerated at Fresno temporary detention center and later Jerome and Rohwer. In camp, Uno was a prolific painter and woodworker. He made a number of paintings and countless wooden masks. The work offered to the Museum appeared in the 1992 exhibition, A View from Within.
