DescriptionColor home movie footage of Southern California, San Francisco, and the California coast filmed by Susan Uemura circa 1953 to 1954. Footage is primarily of the young women’s social club, the Atomettes, and their outings. Clips include a coastal road trip with picnicking, snow play, church excursions, and a trip to San Francisco.

19 – Panning over coastline (out of focus).
37 – Three young women wave at the camera, two more young women stand nearby. They look down at the ocean. More views up the coastline. One young woman in an aloha shirt waves at the camera. (Members of the Atomettes social club.)
00 – Three of the Atomettes wave at the camera from inside a powder blue car; one gets out. One applies lipstick using the car window as a mirror and grins at the camera.

17 – One young woman in black carries a watermelon down a steep rocky slope near the car to the beach.
41 – Stopped roadside near homes; one young woman struts and poses for the camera, a few others walk by and show their outfits. A woman in a flowered hat poses with the young woman (possibly her mother, possibly after church).
36 – Koi nobori (flying carp windsock) on a pole. The young women wear the same outfits as 5:41; walking, posing, and shaking hands for the camera. Young woman in white with flowers at her collar tells the camera “stop it!”

34 – Title card reads “Vacation to North Aug - 53” [1953]

58 – People sledding from further away. People stop for lunch outdoors.
47 – Women exit a car and walk to view large patches of flowers. A horse eats grass.
13 – Family members (and friends?) of a variety of ages sit outdoors and play games and eat. A dog wanders in the background.
