DescriptionBlack and white home movie footage of logging in the Pacific Northwest, filmed by Masahachi Nakata, circa 1924 to 1926. Footage includes multiple views of logging machinery, log booming (men standing on logs in the water), and moving logs into place for cutting by a dock-mounted saw.

Timecode list:

30 -- Camera pans over a large horizontal saw making cutting motions over water (only forward/back). A few logs are visible in the distance in the water.
24 – Man in the background watching while the saw runs (forward/back and raising up and down).
11 – Men standing on logs floating in water (log booming). A multiple-masted ship is visible in the background. Another man walks across logs; the men wield long poles with spiked ends.
39 – Men walking on logs and maneuvering others into place with the spiked poles. Some men appear Caucasian.
23 – Side view, close up, of men guiding logs under the saw and holding them in place during cutting; water sprays when the saw cuts through. Only men’s feet are visible.
09 – View of the saw cutting logs from above/behind the cutting mechanism.
08 – View of the saw cutting logs from in front of the cutting mechanism (further away) at a slight angle; almost full views of workers are visible.
23 – Japanese man carries a small barrel overhead.
32 – Similar view of log cutting as 6:08, full views of workers visible.
45 – Workers move segments of logs after cutting. More log cutting as viewed from straight on in front of the saw. Saw movements create a lot of splashing.
43 – Workers visible, moving logs into position for cutting.
41 – View of the cutting shed straight on, from further away. The entire shed is visible as the workers move logs in place for cutting. The camera operator bobs on the water, the camera is more unsteady than previously.
16 – Side view of a small boat “Marion” idling in the water perpendicular to a raft of logs. Panning over logs chained together. Men stand on floating logs packed tightly together.
15 – Panning view of waterfront in the distance, “Standard Oil Company” sign visible.
38 – Film ends.
